Ten Students Named GHP Semifinalists

Ten students from the Jackson County School System have been named semifinalists for the Governor's Honors Program. The students will compete on Feb. 24 in interviews and auditions to be named finalists and participants in the esteemed four-week long summer program. 

The ten students include: Leila Huss (Communication Arts), Grecia Avellaneda-Castro (Communicative Arts), Layla McKenny (Dance), Jacob Mayhue (Engineering), Lincon Walker (Music), Courtney Cameron (Social Studies), Carlos Revilla Luzardo (Computer Science), Julia Crowthers (Science), Chloe Bradley (Social Studies), Kiera Hamilton (World Languages). 

The semifinalists began as school-level for the various categories. Candidates then went through a selection process to determine district nominees who submitted an application to the state level. JCSS nominated 24 students for the semifinal round. 

The Governor's Honors Program is part of the Governor's Office of Student Achievement and is a four-week long summer residential program for gift and talented rising juniors and seniors and will be held at Georgia Southern University. Approximately 260,000 students from throughout Georgia are eligible for the honor each year, with 3,400 of them being nominated to continue in the process. The GHP program narrows the list to 660 finalists and only 0.25 percent of those eligible receive an invitation to participate in the summer program.
